Ferrari F40

The Ferrari F40 casting was designed by Larry Wood to replicate the real F40, styled by Pietro Camardella under Aldo Brovarone and named to mark Ferrari's 40th anniversary as the last car Enzo Ferrari personally approved. Powered in real life by a twin-turbo 2.9-liter V8 making 471 horsepower, only about 1,311 were built, each originally selling for $400,000. The Hot Wheels version originally featured an opening rear clamshell to view the engine, a detail removed in a 2014 retool done for the Ferrari 5-Pack that also widened the body and added a plastic base; this 1996 mainline release (toy #12935) uses the earlier, opening-feature tooling.
