Second Wind

Second Wind traces its roots to a scrapped Mattel prototype: in 1976 the company was developing a die-cast version of the Mach 5 from Speed Racer, but when licensing talks with the show's rights holders collapsed, designer Larry Wood reworked the tooling into an original casting rather than shelve it, similarly to how the Turismo was derived from another abandoned project. It debuted in the 1977 Flying Colors series with a white body and red-yellow-purple '5' tampo echoing its Mach 5 origins. Mattel would later produce an authentic Mach 5 replica for the Japanese market and, eventually, a full licensed Speed Racer movie tie-in line.
