Volkswagen Beach Bomb

Volkswagen Beach Bomb, an Ira Gilford design from the 1969 lineup, is best known for the surfboards mounted in slots on its sides — a fix applied after an earlier rear-loading prototype, with surfboards poking out the back, proved too top-heavy and narrow to run reliably on Hot Wheels track sets and through the Supercharger accessory. Only an estimated 200 of that unreleased rear-loading version were made, and the redesigned side-loading Beach Bomb that replaced it remains one of the most valuable production redline castings. Howard Rees is credited by some sources with reworking the casting into its released form.
